Hound Association of Scotland 2018 Critique

I had been looking forward to this judging appointment for some time, and I have to say the day was thoroughly enjoyable with a very good entry. I must thank the Committee for inviting me to judge and to my very capable stewards who did a sterling job of keeping me organised. Finally thank you to all the exhibitors who trusted me with their hounds and the sporting nature of all the Deerhound people that we take for granted in this breed. My principle winners are a credit to the breed.

1st Mr I & Mrs L Sawnson. Cotherstone Dallas Dhu Of Altimarlach.
A lovely 7 Month male puppy of good substance, width of body and bone. A very nice head with lovely neat set ears and with a kind expression. Good lay of shoulder and excellent fore chest for his tender age. He had very good depth of body with the correct amount of tuck up very nice rear end with a good second thigh as well as bend of stifle.; Once settled he moved very true coming and going. Best Puppy in Breed.

2nd Mr A, Mr N & Mrs E Dawson. Stranwith Ratagan At Stubbylee.
Very different to 1st but will need time to grow and show his full potential. Very good feet and length of neck.  In profile this puppy moved very well holding a good top line at all times.

Junior Dog Entries 2 Absentees 1

1st Miss A & Mr G J Foote & Crossan. Brylach Prionnsa.
Tall male, pleasing head, good return of upper arm that is lacking in many. Good length of body. Unfortunately carried his tail rather high but apparently was very new to the show ring. Very good harsh coat.

Post Graduate Dog.; Entries 6; Absentees 2

1st Mrs S Cummings. Killoeter Tam Dubh
A very good quality male that was very nice to go over with good bone, substance and strength in back. A little heavy in head for me but he had good ear set leading into strong neck and laid back shoulders. Top line was excellent leading into correct croup and very powerful hind quarters with a good second thigh.  Moved very well but was a little unsettled today.

2nd Dr M G M Mckinnon. Almondbank Real Deal Mcneil For Fingon.
This male truly has some very sound qualities. His size and proportions right down to his classic head. His body construction is fantastic to go over. However I feel if he were to be moved out with a longer stride he could be give so much more.

Limit Dog. Entries 3 Absentees 0

1st S Bauman. Packway Loxley Norton.
A beautiful substantial young male. A good head and intelligent eye with a good ear set, excellent length of neck with laid back shoulders and excellent return of upper arm. Depth of body, fore chest, length of loin all excellent, a lovely shapely top line and powerful hind quarters. Shown in fantastic condition. The overall picture in profile very pleasing. I feel this dog will excel this summer on the open grass rings that are to come as he really couldn’t get into his stride in our indoor ring. I feel this dog should be doing very well in the near future. RCC

2nd Miss S L & Miss N finnett & Heathcote. Hyndsight Pilgrim.
Very close decision for first. A different type. With a good head and ear set with good feet, angulation in shoulder and rear quarters giving a very balanced hound.  Top line was held well on the move. Not the return of upper arm as first but still a very nice Dog that is not over done in anyway.

3rd Dr S Sharp. Killoeter Skye.

Limit and Open dog had some very good quality Hounds, most very different to each other but quality non the less.

1st Mrs K Constantine. Kaleginy The forrester ShCM
A very standard size male with a lovely head and expression. Excellent reach of neck, a good front that follows with excellent feet. Good spring of rib and depth of body, adequate length of loin, curvy hind quarters and low set hocks. Moved extremely well coming and going. In profile where that light elegant but powerful movement we expect to see in a Deerhound was very much on show.; This male is now maturing and the overall picture including the way he is presented is very pleasing. Dog CC.

2nd Mr A & Mrs S Philips. Hyndsight To The Limit With Ladygrove
Another very nice male with good substance and bone who made an overall nice picture. Not quite as balanced as 1st but a nice hound with extremely good top line and croup with good hind quarters. Moved very well when viewed in profile.

3rd Mr M J & Mrs G M Peach. Ch Rubens Hagrid To Kilbourne.

1st Mrs K Constantine. Cotherstone Serenade At Kaleginy.
A very pretty and shapely youngster who I’m sure will carry on improving. Lovely head and kind dark eye, adequate substance with enough underline for her age. Very balanced in construction and moved very well coming and going, with a lovely top line when viewed in profile on the move. Very good feet.  Pushed hard for best puppy.

2nd Mrs Mackenzie. Kilbourne Flora Finching.
Finer and narrower than first, with more day light underneath. Moved well and had a good top line. Will need some time to develop.

Junior Bitch. Entries 2 Absentees 1

1st Ms V Harte. Nixophel Crystal Celestite.
A little finer in bone than I prefer. However she has a pretty feminine head with correct planes and nice dark eye. Rear quarters are good with correct bend of stifle and adequate second thigh. Very nice correct coat.

1st Mrs S J Taylor Minerva Mcgonagall of Ormanstar
Very well presented Shapely bitch. Very good head, well balanced on the moved and stood. Would have preferred a better top line but good depth of body. Moved very true coming and going.

2nd Mr R & Mrs B Heap Leoch Juniper of Fintalloch
A very shapely girl who is well balanced with good length of body and overall shape is very pleasing. Good movement. Pushed very hard for first and could have been the other way round on a different day. I preferred the head on first.

1st Miss S L & Miss N Finnett & Heathcote Hyndsight In Your Dreams
Beautifull proportions with the most correct of front construction with an excellent reach and length of upper arm and lay of shoulder, just the right amount of width in front. Rear proportions so well matched with a correct second thigh and stifle giving a very well balanced hound with very good depth of body.  On the move she held her shape so well with lovely flowing positive movement. Really pleased to award her CC and Best of Breed.

2nd A J & K Morgan & Constantine Cotherstone Islay Mist At Kaleginny.
Another very nice bitch and beautifully presented, who again is of a correct balance and build as first, but just didn’t quite have as much positive reach in front as first. However still a bitch of good quality who is very pleasing to the eye with a lovely shapely outline. RCC

3rd Ms V A & Mrs M M Lindsay Celticmoon Shadow Magic at Silverthyme.

1st Mr R Gillie Dorrator Garvey
A bitch of good quality however very different to the winners of the Limit class. I very much liked her construction that is not overdone in anyway.  A good return of upper arm and shoulder placement with enough fore chest and width. Ribbed far enough back with a good length of loin. Good hind quarters and feet are excellent. Overall moved the best in the class.

2nd Mr M J & Mrs G M Peach Ch Blixten Star to Kilbourne (IMP Fin)
A very well presented girl who is in very good fit condition. A lovely length of neck and shoulder placement. Good length of body and correct croup leading into well constructed rear quarters. A little unsettled today but she did settle enough to show a good positive movement coming and going. A feminine bitch without loosing substance.
